Goin Cali!
Just a quick update. Rach, Luke and I spent the last two days driving from Victoria down to Oceanside, California where Rach will be racing this Saturday. The drive was uneventful, but long. The weather down here is awesome. We have a great little place on the beach and can watch the surfers out the front window. Today was a good tough swim set at the Carlsbad pool in the sunshine followed by a 2:30 spin to loosen out the legs from the drive. I will be getting in a good solid 5 days of riding down here without the need for fenders. Can't wait! Eat, Train, Sleep will be the motto for the next week.
We have a number of HPR teammates joining us down here in a couple days (some to race and some to cheer) so it will be a mini reunion. I will try and post some updates and pictures.

I'm Back (again) and Motivation!
Finally (At least that is how it seems)! I have now put together a good solid couple weeks of training. It seems that my training has been stopping and starting an awful lot since December. Maybe it is age, but whatever it is my body has decided that it wants to start training again, this in turn has had a huge factor on my motivation. I am now eager to get out the door for workouts where before I was always worried that I would come back from workouts feeling down because my body was still letting me know it wasn't ready. There really is something to this listening to the body thing that I preach.
Yesterday was a really exciting day for me as a coach. I had a number of HPR athletes run extremely well up at the Comox Half marathon. One athlete in particular, my wife Rachel, proved to herself that she is indeed back in the game. She raced last summer, but it wasn't at the level she knew she was capable of before her accident. Yesterday, her 3rd place finish in 1:26 was a major breakthrough for her. Not only was it a pb over the distance, but it was an affirmation that she is not only back where she was before 2006, she is better. Talk about taking a hit and continuing to move forward. That is what has inspired me this week.

It Ain't About How Hard You Can Hit!
Every now and then things happen in our lives that put things into perspective. This past week two of the hardest working and most positive athletes on Human Powered Racing (Alan Boos and Kelly Sharman) took a hit. The way that they have handled these set backs has shown me what it means to be a champion and just how athletes in general are different than your average person. As Allan was sitting on the side of the road with a broken collarbone he came out with this; "It's not how hard you can hit, it's how hard you can get hit. And keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!" That came from this movie clip (sorry I couldn't embed the Youtube video itself) and it is definitely the Monday Morning Inspiration.
