Adventure Weekend

This weekend most of HPR took a break from regular training to do a little hiking, zip lining and swinging through trees (meanwhile a team mate was busy ripping up an Ironman courses in Mexico and a few others were trudging through streams at the annual Gunner Shaw race here in Victoria). Here are a few pictures from the former.

Powerful Words

I have never really been sure of Toronto Maple Leaf General Manager Brian Burke. After this statement regarding his son, I now have a new appreciation and respect for the man.

Brendan Burke, son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, recounted his difficulty in revealing his homosexuality to his father in an espn.com article published yesterday.

Burke, now a student manager with U.S. college's top-ranked Miami University (Ohio) hockey team, said he stopping playing hockey after making the varsity team as a high-school senior, fearing he could not make it through another season without someone finding out his sexual preference.

He finally told his father in December of 2007.

"I had a million good reasons to love and admire Brendan. This news didn't alter any of them," Brian Burke told espn.com. "I would prefer Brendan hadn't decided to discuss this issue in this very public manner. There will be a great deal of reaction, and I fear a large portion will be negative. But this takes guts, and I admire Brendan greatly, and happily march arm in arm with him on this.

"There are gay men in professional hockey. We would be fools to think otherwise. And it's sad that they feel the need to conceal this. I understand why they do so, however.

"... I wish this burden would fall on someone else's shoulders, not Brendan's. Pioneers are often misunderstood and mistrusted. But since he wishes to blaze this trail, I stand beside him with an axe! I simply could not be more proud of Brendan than I am, and I love him as much as I admire him."

Quick Update

Life is rolling along. Days are short here in Victoria now, so it makes motivation wane at times. Unlike years past I am not taking off-season quite as off as I have in the past (although you wouldn't think this by reading my twitter updates). I am actually training each day and putting in around 15 hours a week of training. Nothing structured, just a couple hours a day of something. Randy comments on my training log now and then (more to laugh at me than anything). I did put in a couple serious weeks of training for the beer mile which involved both beer and running on the track (didn't put the two together until race day). I don't know why beer company's haven't jumped on top of this event and tried to get it on TV. Talk about spectator friendly. Most of your armchair athletes could never imagine doing an Ironman, but I am sure that they could all see themselves drinking four beers and running around a track four times.

As for my 2010 season, that is still in the planning stages. I know I will be doing a camp with HPR in Tucson the first two weeks of March. After that I am still working out a plan that will have me ready for Ironman U.S.A. Lake Placid in July. The WTC is taking on a new initiative with a Pro Membership. Other pros have sounded off on their blogs about this development. I am still waiting for them to come out with a little more information before I give my opinion. As it stands now there are a lot of aspects of it that simply don't make sense or are too vague to really comment on. Saying you are going to do more drug testing and out of competition testing is great, but there is no real detail as to how they are going to do this. There is no doubt that we need more testing in our sport, but it has to be transparent.

Blue Rodeo - One Light Left in Heaven

Speaking of great voices. Another Canadian.
Looking forward to seeing these guys again next week here in Victoria. I love it when the good shows roll through town in off season.

'Comme Des Enfants' by Coeur De Pirate on QTV

Rach and I heard this performance on CBC driving to Penticton this summer and were blown away even though we couldn't understand most of it. What a voice.

Back on Ice

Was back on the blades a couple weeks ago for the first time in quite a while.
Here we are celebrating Brad's Canadian citizenship with a bit of a skate. As an Australian he must wear the helmet for one full year at public skates. It is kind of like a graduated license. Our country gave him hockey and he has turned me on to Vegemite. Congrats Brad.

Alii Drive

Some inspiration on Alii Drive (thanks to good friends and dog sitters Stevo and Robyn) that I didn't see until now.

HPR Kick Off 2010 - Poets Cove

Some pictures from our kick off weekend over on Pender Island this past weekend. A great time at a great resort.

Go Dog Go

Rach is the master at getting these guys out to off leash areas and allowing them to have fun and be, well, dogs. To say this is Rach's passion would be an understatement. In fact it has been for quite some time, hence 3 dogs of our own. Rach has taken her passion and turned it into what I am certain will be a tremendously successful business venture. Go Dog Go Canine Adventure Walking is a specialty dog walking service that she is now offering with door to door service. Your dogs will be picked up by Rach and Murphy (don't worry he doesn't do the driving) and taken to off leash parks and trails for a good run. As you can tell from these pictures a tired dog is a happy dog. For more information visit www.go-dog-go.ca
